Scientologit and mormon apostates

does anyone find it odd that it seems there's less of a vocal apostate movement for scientology and mormons.

i'm getting this from google - i can't seem to find any majour forums like this one, or websites that are regularly updated exposing doctrines etc.. there is stuff out there, but from my search at least it doesn't seem to be as much as jw's.. strange considering mormons have 13 mill (?).

My take on the mormons: crack smokin' wackass belief system for sure, but, as a group, not as insular and punitive towards dissenters as JWs are, and I don't think that the leadership constantly howls about their authority and rages on and on and on about apostates the way the JW leadership does. Although I do believe that plenty of former Mormons are shunned by their family and friends that are still active in the faith, shunning isn't such a freaking INSTITUTION among mormons the way it is among the dubs.

My take on scientology: be GLAD that it was JWs, and not these crazy nazis, that you made your escape from. The low internet activity among ex-scientologists is probably because there really aren't that many of them overall, as Scientologists, by outsider estimates, only number about 100k-200k worldwide.

There comes a time when you realize that all the leadership of the WTS cares about is their imagined authority. For me that realization came during the 2001 DC Convention 'Korah' drama.

so given the amount of focus on things that we can be angry or upset about, or how we have been wronged or abused.... i thought it was time for a bit of a change.. how about sharing some fun experiences?!!

i promised, in my opening post the other day, that i would share some that have happened over the years.

I was a typical oddball converted-as-an-adult JW. I remember being out in field service with some JW teens, and it must have been nerves or something I ate or both but I just DESTROYED the air in that little car, all morning long. We're talking, the rank, potent-as-hell stuff.

I don't think they knew what to think. Kinda embarrassing to think about that, although funny too. I've gotten better as the years have gone by concerning, um, holding and releasing at the appropriate time!

since our episode with our oldest son and his wife we know the word is out that we no longer want to be jw.

the other day an elder from fl tried to call us but our fax machine was on during his attempt.

i quess when he heard the fax noise he thought he may have had the wrong number.

Matthew 24:45 is cited or quoted in WTS literature more often than both John 3:16 and 14:6. Far more.

2014 means nothing

i know there have been many comments over the recent past about 2014 being potentially a key point in time for the wts as it's 100 years since 1914 but my view is that it means absolutely nothing.. people are people and history shows the psychological hold that organisations like the wts has just carries on captivating people.

the org survived the 1975 debacle and they will potter on for years to come regardless of things like 100 years since 1914, especially since this is something the wts are simply not talking about.

it means nothing to anyone other than people looking for something to bash the wts with.. it's not mentioned in the literature and is unlikely to be anytime soon - why the heck would the wts want to remind people of the length of time?.

The truth is that, whilst I have heard some chatter about it from those in the org, nobody really cares.

You don't know their private thoughts though. Of course there isn't a lot of talk among r&f JWs concerning how 2014 will mark 100 years from when the gentile times ended and christ took his throne in heaven. The very act of mentioning it would just be discouraging. And we need to encourage each other brothers and sisters!

But, on Jan 1, 2015, your 25, 30, 40+ year JWs are going to wake up in the morning, and the old system will still be here. And I do think that many of them, in spite of themselves, will think about the significance of the year 2015. And it will be just another drag on their ever-flagging enthusiasm for JWism.

So no, no mass exodus. As has been said many times on this forum, that will never happen barring some absolutely atrocious scandal that went all the way to the top. What will happen is the same as what's been happening in WT-land for years now, only imo 2015 will give it a little boost: less enthusiasm for field service, meetings getting even more stale and repetitive (if that's even possible) and sparsely attended, more young people breaking ranks, more shrill and hysterical "OBEY US!" barking in the publications, more depressed JWs, less money in the collection box, etc.

This religion, although growing in numbers, is a hollow shell of it's former glory (such as it was), and 2015 will only make it that much more so.

i think the appeal of the movies is that they cartoon-ify it all. Nobody would go see Global Warming: The Movie, where the fallout from increasing C02 and methane levels gradually wipe out all life on earth by the 25th century. No, they wanna see Tom Cruise kick ass and take names. Just so happens that the end-of-the-world happens to be the current backdrop du jour. Which I guess that says a lot about the general mood in this country.

1. christian puritan perfectionism in america (1620 to mid 1800's) failed to create heaven on earth or a shining city on a hill.

civil war dashed that delusion.. 2. the great awakening in america took up the slack only to be followed by advent speculations that the end would be immiment.. 3. william miller inspired a movement of adventists to break with their own local churches in anticipation of jesus' arrival.. 4. the work of the adventists seems to be warning as many people as possible before 1843. the splits in local churches caused lasting enmity.

a contrarian sense of "we'll show them we're right" is hardened into the character of newly minted apostates.. 5. the great disappointment leaves perhaps 100,000 2nd adventists stranded theologically between a no-show on jesus' part and a "we told you so!
